Projects

During the 50:50 program, households in your church are nvited to donate $50.00 each to support some of the world's poorest households as they lift themselves out of poverty. These projects run through Baptist World Aid Australia and donations are tax deductible. Here are just some of the projects your donations will support.

Cambodia is one of the world's poorest nations. Over one-third of the population live below the poverty line and fifteen percent of children don't live to see their fifth birthday.In the north east province of Strung Treng our partner is helping turn this story around in over one hundred villages. Villagers
  • learn improved farming methods that help raise their incomes and ensure families have sufficient food;
  • traditional birth attendants receive training and support, which has resulted in a dramatic lowering of the maternal mortality rate;
  • households learn how to construct their own toilets, which has seen a plummeting in the incidence of diarrhoea;
  • health education and the provision of treated bed nets have seen far fewer cases of malaria.

Almost two in every five Papuans live below the poverty line, four out of ten children who start Grade 1 fail to complete Grade 5, one in thirteen children die before reaching the age of five, only four out of ten people have access to safe drinking water, tribal conflict is common, and HIV/AIDS is on the verge of becoming epidemic. Baptist World Aid partners with the Baptist Union of New Guinea in transforming PNG communities through:
  • building the management, leadership and conflict resolution skills of church and community leaders (half of PNG's health and education services are delivered through churches);
  • developing the financial management capacity of school administrators;
  • running community health initiatives that educate people about HIV and providing support to families affected by HIV;
  • providing training on guarding safe water supply and preparation for droughts.

In remote and isolated areas of East Timor facilities such as hospitals, community health clinics and health outposts are very limited or non-existent and even where present there is a severe lack of qualified medical staff to run them. As a result people suffer from illnesses that can be prevented and the mortality rate is high, especially among children. Diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and respiratory tract and childhood infections are prevalent. Triloka is one of the few remaining areas in the world where active leprosy still exists. Baptist World Aid's partner, Fundacao Lafaek Diak has established a medical clinic in Triloka village, Baucau District, that will provide direct medical services to residents of six rural villages.Their work includes:
  • direct medical services, including treatment of illness, pre and post natal care, immunisation, and provision of medicines;
  • community health education;
  • job training and upskilling of medical staff.
